Travel Films to Beat the January Blues

Travel Films to Beat the January Blues

With sun-kissed scenery, silken clothes revealing just the right amount of skin and cultural differences to seduce – and sometimes create intrigue – travel has always been a rich subject for filmmakers. Wherever you are in the world this January, the below titles will transport you through beautiful places and fresh perspectives, feeding your appetite for adventure and perhaps even inspiring your next trip.

Y Tu Mamá También, Mexico

This road trip film directed by Alfonso Cuarón combines youthful self-discovery with poignant reflections on love, gender and class. Two teenage boys (Diego Luna, Gael García Bernal) and one attractive older woman (Maribel Verdú) drive from Mexico City to a secret beach in Oaxaca through dazzling landscapes.

Lost in Translation, Japan

Set in the Park Hyatt Tokyo, Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film explores alienation and human connection against the backdrop of the city’s confounding streets. Ageing movie star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and conflicted newlywed, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) share chance moments that are often funny, sometimes inscrutable and always moving.

Wild Strawberries , Sweden

Released in 1957, Ingmar Bergman’s introspective classic is a meditation on life’s fleeting beauty and the lessons learnt along the way. Professor Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) drives from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary degree through a haunting Nordic landscape where memories, musings and dreams are interwoven into pine forests and winding roads.

Almost Famous, USA

Directed by Cameron Crowe, this semi-autobiographical gem takes us on a rock’n’roll odyssey through 1970s America, where the only maps are music and adventures. Seen through the eyes of 15-year-old William Miller, an aspiring journalist for Rolling Stone, the film is as much about coming of age as it is about discovering the rhythm of the road.

The Talented Mr. Ripley, Italy

Like a cinematic postcard from sun-drenched Positano in the 1950s, Anthony Minghella’s film follows an unsettlingly charming con man (Matt Damon) as he allows his relentless ambition to lead him into a world of privilege – and deception. Supporting performances from a young Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow only add to the glamour.
