Thrilling Film Highlights
Our insiders agree that Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, which premiered on 17 May, is one not to miss and has been hotly anticipated following the success of Poor Things. A triptych of stories, from a screenplay Lanthimos co-wrote with Efthimis Filippou (as with The Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer and Dogtooth), Kinds of Kindness has a star-studded cast including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn.
Also competing for the Palme d’Or is Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis, which has been in the making for decades. Inspired by H.G. Wells’s 1936 sci-fi film Things to Come, Megalopolis follows architect Cesar, played by Adam Driver, as his plans to rebuild the city into a utopia after an accident are thwarted. Driver appears alongside a host of stars including Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight and Jason Schwartzman.
Screening out of competition for its world premiere is the stunt-filled Furiosa, George Miller’s Max Max: Fury Road prequel. Based on ideas Miller has had with him for more than a decade and starring Anya Taylor-Joy as its titular anti-heroine, it’s set to become a surefire Hollywood hit.
