Discover the Blues in New Orleans

Discover the Blues in New Orleans

Emerging in the years following World War II, the Louisiana blues is a genre steeped in raw emotion and soulful storytelling. The term “the blues” traces back to the 17th-century expression “the blue devils,” referring to hallucinations caused by alcohol withdrawal. If you find yourself in New Orleans, there’s no better way to spend your time, than in the city’s most authentic blues venues.

Frenchmen Street

Dubbed the ‘local’s Bourbon Street’, the hum of jazz, reggae and blues spilling out of the clubs lining Frenchmen Street creates a buzzing backtrack for the city’s most authentic live music scene. This lively corridor is a feast for the senses, brimming with colourful façades and buzzing energy. With renowned venues such as Snug Harbor, Blue Nile and the Apple Barrel Bar, you’ll be spoilt for choice as you drift from one spot to the next. Spontaneous performances by street musicians create a magnetic atmosphere and the street also features the Frenchmen Art Bazaar, a nighttime showcase for local artists.

Maple Leaf Bar

Established in early 1974, the Maple Leaf is the city’s oldest continuously operating music club. This beloved local haunt is housed in a quintessential 19th-century building, complete with a cosy patio out back. Tuesday nights are especially popular, featuring local favourites Rebirth Brass Band. Past performers have included luminaries such as James Booker, Clarence Brown and Henry Butler.

Tipitina's

This legendary music venue has worn many hats over the years, including stints as a gambling house and brothel. Today it stands as a sacred space for both local and international acts. Named after the well-known song by pianist Henry Roeland Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair, who performed at the club until his death in 1980, it remains dedicated to preserving his unique fusion of rhumba, boogie-woogie, blues and southern R&B.
