An ASMALLWORLD Guide to Carnevale di Venezia

An ASMALLWORLD Guide to Carnevale di Venezia

The Venice Carnival – or Carnevale di Venezia – is one of the most renowned and oldest carnivals in the world, attracting partygoers from across the globe over the two weeks leading up to Lent. This year’s festivities will take place between February 22 and March 4, with a packed programme of displays, balls, activities and performances taking place across the city.

At the heart of the carnival are the iconic masks, a tradition dating back to the 12th century. These stunning works of art were once a way for Venetians to hide their identity and social status, allowing them to be free of judgement. Today, the masks continue to be intrinsic to the festivities, with intricate designs that tell stories of Venetian history and heritage. Carnival-goers can be seen strolling through the city wearing everything from simple, classic pieces to gold-laced or porcelain ensembles.

VENICE COMES ALIVE FOR THE CARNEVALE DI VENEZIA

The carnival is a whirlwind of grand balls, street parades and performances, transforming Venice into a city-wide theatre. This year will feature a series of pre-carnival events on February 15 and 16, including theatrical shows, treasure hunts and boat cruises. During the main carnival, the city puts on a dramatic display of even more pomp and pageantry, with concerts, costume shows, elaborate galas and balls.

As an ASMALLWORLD Member, you will have exclusive access to a number of VIP benefits and opportunities during the carnival, including Il Ballo del Doge, the most glamorous and highly anticipated event of the carnival. This historical masked ball is a relic of carnivals past and present, with ornate costumes, dramatic masks, an elaborate feast, and music and dancing all night long. This year’s ball will take place at the end of the carnival on Saturday, 1 March 2025, in the majestic setting of the Scuola Grande della Misericordia.
