A Scenic Road Trip through Northern Italy

A Scenic Road Trip through Northern Italy

If you find yourself longing for a Roman Holiday but want to avoid the sweltering summer heat, why not explore Italy before the crowds arrive for summer? Few regions offer such an irresistible combination of culture, cuisine and natural beauty as effortlessly as Northern Italy.

Milan

Start your trip atop the rooftops of Duomo di Milano, where breathtaking views unfold amidst a company of Lombard Gothic gargoyles. As the global capital for fashion, Milan offers some of the best shopping experiences in the world – so indulge accordingly. Stroll through the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, a grand 19th-century shopping arcade with frescoed ceilings and mosaic floors and reward yourself with an immersion in aperitivo culture; few cities do it as well as Milan.

Roam the Brera design district, full of sophisticated bars offering Campari and Aperol spritz and dine on subtle saffron risotto or succulent slow-braised ossobuco, both traditional Milanese dishes.

Cervinia

Next, we recommend journeying two-and-a-half hours northeast up to Cervinia, at the base of the Matterhorn, one of the highest ski resorts in the Alps, which has been known to see snowfall well into April. Originally an old climbing village, Cervinia retains its historic charm despite modern adaptations. For dining, try La Bricole or Le Pousset, or indulge at Michelin-starred Wood where the menu combines Swedish and Italian influences.

Lago di Garda

If you didn’t have time to explore Italy’s lake district while in Milan, fear not. Your next stop is Italy’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Garda. Cushioned between the edge of the Italian Alps and rolling wine regions, it is the ultimate destination for a slow-paced and culinary getaway since it boasts more than 15 Michelin-starred restaurants dotted around the lake. Explore historic sites such as Rocca Scaligera Castle, Riva del Garda town and the Roman ruins in Sirmione.

Venice

From its romantic canals to its rich artistic heritage, Venice is the perfect finale to your Northern Italian Road trip. Glide through the canal city by gondola, wander through its maze of alleyways and take in the romance of the city from one of its many Piazzas, enjoying signature bellinis.
