Widder Hotel
About the hotel
"A downtown hotel that’s a perpetually-happening spot with decadent, varied rooms and unmistakable panache, Widder Hotel boasts two great restaurants and the hippest bar in town."
The hippest bar in town and two very happening restaurants ensures there’s familiarity and fun to keep you coming back again and again. We loved the location and the many historical aspects of the hotel. Rooms are comfortable, with all the amenities you could wish for. Wood floors, wooden panelling, warm colours, beautiful fabrics and artworks abound.
Keeping in mind that some rooms are larger than others, if you’re particular, it’s best you ask in advance; remember that this is not a cookie-cutter hotel by a long shot. With good lighting, soundproofing and, while views vary, Bang & Olufsen TVs and radios which you can also access within the bathroom mirror, the place you’ll be spending the most time in – bed – is... With good lighting, soundproofing and, while views vary, Bang & Olufsen TVs and radios which you can also access within the bathroom mirror, the place you’ll be spending the most time in – bed – is supremely comfortable.
Marble bathrooms are spacious with good showers, fluffy robes, slippers and Widder-branded toiletries. Better yet, movement-sensitive night-lights guide guests from bed to bathroom, or to the Nespresso machine when caffeine calls early in the morning.
In Swiss German, widder means ram, so-named because the buildings were part of the original butcher’s guild. Meat reigns supreme on the menus at both Widder Bar & Kitchen and Restaurant Boucherie-AuGust, the two in-house establishments. At Widder, there’s a bar menu for those looking for a casual bite, but the main menu is worth perusing as cleverly concocted “themes” include suggestions for starters, mains, desserts and a cocktail. Or try Boucherie-August, a more rustic option, where sausages and other less-favoured parts of the animal are showcased.
As we said, fun is on the cards here at the Widder Hotel, and creativity and innovation. There are no resort-style facilities here, so this is a property for anyone looking for a downtown experience with a difference. Those with no joie de vivre need not check in.
