There are many rooms to choose from, but we loved Suite 20. One two levels, there’s a living room upstairs and the entire suite is decorated in cool, cream-colored hues with the scent of jasmine and the sound of cicadas wafting in from the outdoors.
Music and wine have long been a focus of Aix. The city hosts an annual opera festival in the summer (check the internet for dates), and the Villa Gallici boasts one of the most gorgeous wine cellars in the region. Located in a special building on the grounds that was designed to resemble a decanter, there are over 330 labels within from near and far. Visits and tastings are a definite must.
If you are here in the summer months, an afternoon by the pool is a must. Adjacent is the small spa which has a sauna and one treatment room (and a tanning booth). There’s also a gym with Technogym machines, but why not skip the gym and head off on the walk of Cezanne’s sites, including his childhood home and his atelier? If you’re here on a Saturday, head to the colourful local market.
After which, a Pastis at the legendary Les Deux Garçons on the Cours Mirabeau is a must. But, for many reasons, don’t eat there. Head back to your hotel where the restaurant is a destination unto itself, and the food is absolute perfection. Eat breakfast and lunch outside under the plane trees surrounded by the sounds of Provence and dinner indoors, where the service and lavish surroundings are sublime.
