"A pink belle-époque vision with a vibrant past, Vidago Palace sits on a majestic 250-acre park and boasts timeless rooms, an 18-hole golf course and a sleek spa."

Most grand hotels have a history; the Vidalgo Palace hotel uncontestably boasts both grandeur and a vibrant past. Originally commissioned by King Carlos I, the palace was built by his son, King Manuel II, and was scheduled to open on October 6th, 1910. Sadly, Manuel (known as The Unfortunate) was overthrown in a coup the day before and he never stayed in his dream palace. Some things were not meant to be.

Fast-forward 100 years and, after closing for several years for major renovations, the belle-époque pink palace reopens, reborn. It offers a choice of 70 rooms and suites, an 18-hole, par-72 golf course and a sleek, modern spa that makes use of the renowned Vidago therapeutic mineral water in all its treatments. The spa is notable and includes 10 treatment rooms, vitality as well as indoor and outdoor pools, hammams, saunas and a superb gym.

Recreation (and wine, of course) is a big reason guests flock here whenever the weather warms up. The property sits majestically within the 250-acre Centenary Park that's filled with magnolias, camellias and century-old sequoia trees. There are pathways and trails galore for guests to wander. Also on the grounds are several fully-restored, mineral-water springs that are worth a visit and a chance to taste the water.

Within the hotel itself, elements of the glory of a bygone era have been lovingly brought back to life or replaced to ensure the hotel reflects its past. The gilded ceilings, the grand, sweeping staircase, tapestries, mosaic floors, carpets and wall coverings are beautiful to behold. Rooms are large and very comfortable; many interconnect. The Privilege Rooms have the best bathrooms, but all have tubs and showers. If you need a balcony, opt for a suite and enjoy the superb views.

Dining here is everything you expect it to be, and there are both formal and informal restaurants, as well as poolside snacks and wine tastings with tapas most days in the fabulous Winecellar. The chef prides himself on his choice of delectable local dishes, sourcing as much as possible close to home.

Kids are welcome here, and there’s a dedicated team at the kids’ club to engage them for hours, both indoors and out. Under 16s may use the indoor pool, but the outdoor pool is adults-only. Pets are welcome, and well looked after, like everyone else lucky enough to call the Vidago Palace hotel home for a few days.
