On the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the hotel is a 40-minute boat ride from downtown Bangkok. So for party people, it’s not the best location. If you’re here to sightsee, however, it’s spot-on; the hotel’s riverboat will ferry you to the nearby museums and temples, a sure way to beat the city traffic.

The ultimate accommodation on the premises, should you wish to splurge, is Connie’s Cottage. It’s a traditional Thai teak house that’s now over a hundred years old – a splendid, rustic Thai Pool Cottage. Originally the home of Connie Mangskau, best friend of American silk tycoon Jim Thompson, it is said he helped chose the home for her way back when.
You’ll need at least a day to luxuriate here at the property itself and spend time, at least, at the 23 metre-long infinity pool overlooking the river. The Opium Spa offers heavenly treatments as well as yoga, meditation sessions and, important to some, hairdressing services. There’s also a gym with personal trainers (and optional Muay Thai boxing classes) where you might, upon occasion, come upon a member of the royal family working out. The crown prince, it is said, lives right around the corner.
Small though the hotel is, food and drink options are plentiful. The poolside bar offers snacks and lite bites throughout the day, but save space for a decadent meal at the Chon Thai Restuarant in the evening. The lively Deco Bar & Bistro serves Western fare, and there’s a cafe too.
The team will do their utmost to make sure your stay is memorable in every way, including, if you’re so inspired, the chance to get a traditional Sak Yant tattoo done right here on the premises. It’ll be hand-etched onto your skin in ancient geometric designs while Buddhist prayers are chanted in the distance.
