Several blocks away from Waikiki Beach, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach is located just where you want to be while you’re here in town. You’ll be far away enough from the mayhem of the beach, and yet you can tap in whenever you wish. Furthermore, you’ll be on Luxury Row where the finest boutiques are located (Miu Miu, Gucci, Chanel and Burberry, to name a few) and only a few minutes drive to Hanauma Bay, an excellent snorkelling beach, and the Pearl Harbor Memorial. If you’ve kids in tow, visits to Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo should appeal.

An elevator whisks guests up to the seventh floor of the building where the lobby, with its very unique indoor-outdoor feel, is located. With one wall removed, panoramic views of the ocean unfold beyond the greenery of the gardens below. The Hermes-inspired front desk wrapped in leather, the blue-green polished Brazilian marble on the walls and a Scandinavian ceiling sculpture are just a few of the aesthetic pieces that draw the eye, promises of a stylish stay ahead.

And stylish are the residences, all 204 of them. Starting at 40 sq m (430 sq ft), entry-level rooms are large, and the facilities are superb. Each comes with a washer and dryer, a kitchenette with a Subzero counter-height fridge and Miele kitchen cooktop and microwave as well as an ocean-view lanai (terrace). There’s even a pull-out couch for an unexpected guest. All the mod-cons you would expect are provided, and bathrooms come with Toto toilets, tubs and showers. Decor is light and bright, done up in breezy shades of mint, soft grey and cream.

Dining here is something special, and there are numerous other establishments nearby should you have the urge to explore. Start your day at Dean and Deluca’s for breakfast. There’s a wine bar here too, on the second floor, so you’ll no doubt be back at some point. There’s a French restaurant, La Vie, and an open-air Italian called Quiora. Sushi Sho has 10 seats and specialises in Edomae-style sushi with a 32-course menu. Lucky you if you can get a seat; bring your credit card.

Outside on the lobby level are twin pools, one for families and one adults-only, both with poolside service. Cabanas are available. The resort boasts a spa that uses native products like volcanic stones and rainforest leaves in its treatments, and there’s a snazzy gym with the latest and greatest equipment and a yoga studio.
