The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans occupies a very grand Beaux-Arts building that was once a department store and dates back to the early 1900s. The building is as pretty as can be, a theme that continues into the public spaces and the rooms within. In fact, there’s alot that’s special about this hotel: the rooms and suites are delightful, the restaurant and the bar are super and the spa is a lovely sanctuary. The hotel’s quaint and quiet atrium with its manicured trees and tropical plants, however, is hands-down the property’s best feature.

Situated on Canal Street in the city’s historic French Quarter, the location, while convenient to outside dining and sightseeing opportunities, can be somewhat overwhelming at times; hence the atrium’s attraction. Another nice aspect, the hotel’s lobby is located on the third floor, so arriving here feels very discreet as you exit the hustle and bustle of the city.

Marble bathrooms (with Asprey amenities) help add to the luxurious feel of the rooms. Opt for a room with a city view, and upgrade, if you can, to the Club Level, where the elegant lounge serves nibbles and drinks around the clock which, for most, is well worth the extra spend.

The hotel’s restaurant M Bistro has some superb local dishes on its menu – chicken and dumplings, and gumbo, as examples. Breakfast here is outstanding, with lots of Lousiana goodies like boudin sausage on offer. The restaurant is made even more special with paintings of George Rodrigue’s Blue Dog series, representing the preservation of Cajun culture, adorning the walls.

Pay a visit to the hotel’s vast spa (go for the Voodoo Ritual?) with its 22 treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms. It also has a beauty salon within where pedicures, manicures and a hair salon will get you looking your best for pre or post-prandial drinks in the elegant Davenport Lounge. Live jazz is hosted here most nights.
