Entry-level rooms are elegant, well-lit and very comfortable. Brass accents and richly-coloured Oriental carpets grace each one, while vast windows offer views out over the city or the swimming pool (either is fine, really). Basic WiFi is included, but if you want to speed things up, there’s a fee. A high floor room is recommended if you wish to avoid as much noise as possible from the streets below. There are Nespresso machines in the rooms, and your butler (every room has one) will bring you anything you need to go with your morning cup of joe. The bathrooms have tubs, separate rainfall showers and Asprey amenities, and if you upgrade to a Club Level room (ditto the suites), you’ll have access to the dedicated lounge where breakfast and lunch are included, as is afternoon tea and alcoholic beverages and hors d’oeuvres every evening. All this, we say, usually pays off. Note that children under the age of 12 are not allowed in the lounge. Suites are on a grander scale, perfect for families who need more space.
Dining in the hotel offers several choices, all of them good. Harkening (once again) back to the British era, The Library offers a traditional Sunday roast on weekends and otherwise a mixture of international and western dishes. Cognacs and the likes are served as post-prandial digestifs, and there’s The Smoke Room right here with its fine selection of Cuban cigars to dip into. Li Yen serves excellent Cantonese fare, and the Cobalt Room serves breakfast as does The Patisserie, open throughout the day.
The hotel has a full-service spa – The Spa Village – offering a plethora of fabulous treatments as well as manicures, pedicures and hair salon services. There’s also a fitness centre, two outdoor pools and an expansive outdoor water garden surrounded by waterfalls.
