Planning a sojourn in this beautiful, historical, chic and cosmopolitan city? Lucky you. And a stay at the newly renovated Ritz Carlton Hotel de la Paix, Geneva will not only exceed your expectations, but it will allow you to sightsee from the comfort of your (lake view with balcony) luxuriously appointed room.

That’s right. Take in the Alps, the lake, the famous Jet D’eau fountain, the striking green spire of the St. Pierre Cathedral and, if you’re here on the Swiss national day – August 1st – fabulous fireworks. Order up a perfectly chilled bottle of Switzerland’s Chasselas blanc to enjoy on your balcony as you people-watch the comings and goings on the quayside below.

The 74 rooms and suites in this elegant vintage building are on-trend – posh and plush – and, in true Swiss style, discreet. Bathrooms all have bathtubs and a separate walk-in shower along with a wall-mounted make-up mirror, fluffy robes and slippers which you’ll want to don after slathering yourself in the Asprey body lotion they provide. Colour schemes are soft and neutral, allowing the surrounds of the city and the brilliant blue lake outside to seep in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s a desk if you really must do some work; good luck with that.

Built in the mid 19th century, some of the rooms retain their original, unique features, fireplaces even, and all have Illy coffee machines. Some have walk-in closets, too, perfect for those who never travel light and plan to leave town with even more.

Because the city centre with all the boutiques and watch shops you could ever wish for is just a quick walk away over the bridge. But we wager you’ll want to spend time here too. The lobby is remarkable with its grand marble pillars, chandeliers and its black and white chequered floor. Just off of which is the Living Room Bar & Kitchen, where the chef makes a mean tartare de boeuf. The speciality here, however, is the risotto that’s decadently cooked inside a rind of Grana Padano cheese. If you’re looking for something unique, Dans le Noir serves decadent three-course meals in total darkness.

And a first for Geneva – make a reservation – is the hip, Scandinavian fusion-forward Fiskebar. Go for the business lunch if you can’t decide what to order. It’s that good. There’s a suite named after Princess Grace of Monaco who graciously loved to call this place home when here in Geneva. You’ll soon see why.
