Without a doubt, the Ritz-Carlton, Doha lives up to the brand’s stellar reputation here in Qatar’s capital city. Expect superlative service, elegant rooms, fine facilities and a great location to boot. Lagoona Mall is not far away, a great place to do a bit of shopping or grab a bite to eat while people watching.

It is one of Doha’s older hotels – opened in 2000 – so there’s been plenty of time to get things right, and, till today, the property covets an air of exclusivity and refinement. Rooms and suites (374 in total) have all been recently updated, and they are comfortable, well-equipped and very easy on the eye. Even the entry-level ones have hardwood floors, velvet sofa chairs, marble bathrooms, Nespresso machines and secluded balconies. You won’t be disappointed, especially if you go for a view of the sea. If you’re only here for a short visit, choosing where to dine here at the hotel may prove difficult. The hotel restaurants have won several awards, and the smorgasbord of choice includes a French brasserie, an uber-chic American-style steak restaurant, a buffet breakfast venue, a casual poolside restaurant and several bars and lounges offering everything from creatively crafted cocktails, fine wines and bite-sized burgers. Local specialities are, of course, available at every meal which you’ll need to try, starting the day with a full Arabic breakfast and ending it with a cup of cardamom-flavoured coffee and a fresh, Qatari date.

There’s a lavish spa with two hammams, a fancy gym, two indoor tennis and one squash court. There’s an indoor pool and a stunning outdoor pool that’s surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, a hair salon and a fashion boutique. If that’s not enough, ask the concierge to organise an hour or two for you to test the waters on a jet ski from the adjoining marina. Golf can also be arranged.
