This modern tower, which houses 193 guest rooms and suites, combines design inspiration from many of Europe’s most celebrated boutique hotels with the clever use of historic materials such as saddle leather, linen, wood and steel. The vibrant, comfortable spaces within encourage guests to relax (or work if needs be) in the hotel at large.

The rooms are supremely comfortable, with armchairs and footstools, plenty of plugs and connection sockets and huge, cosy beds – American style. Grand marble bathrooms have a separate shower and WC and Asprey toiletries. For a bit of extra luxury, have the bath butler draw you a scented bath to help you unwind after a long travel day. Grab a bite at one of the fireside tables while you’re here, or take a seat at the bar itself, where you could try at least one of ten signature martinis created to honour the bar’s address: 10 Avery Street.

Otherwise, the only other dining option within, besides the 24-hour room service, is the Artisan Bistro that’s open morning to night and serves modern American fare (including local specialities like clam chowder and Maine lobster rolls).

In the mornings, water, apples and towels are set up in the lobby, handy if you’re returning from an outdoor workout. There’s complimentary coffee, too – a good thing as it turns out – because the rooms don’t have coffee machines, something you may want to consider before you order that second (third?) martini in the Avery Bar.

The hotel has a direct connection to the Equinox Sports Club (at a cost) which has an indoor pool, squash courts, fitness classes and a spa.
