In this picture-perfect setting with sweeping ocean views sits The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara. You’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re somewhere else entirely for a moment (the Med, apart from the waves), as the pseudo-Spanish village with winding paths, white stucco walls and red-tiled roofs belie the true location at first take. With its 358 decidedly modern rooms and suites and one of the largest spas on California’s Central Coast, whether you choose to veg out or be as active as you possibly can – play golf or tennis, surf, hit the gym, take an exercise class, go for a swim in one of the three pools (one is adult-only) – it’s all here for you at the touch of a button. If none of that appeals, rent a supercar and toodle off to the Santa Ynez Mountains, home to some of California’s most exciting wineries and vineyards.
The resort has several superb dining and drinking options, including the Angel Oak steakhouse which is perched on a cliff with ocean views and has an astonishing 12,000-bottle wine cellar and a superb and highly personable sommelier to guide you every step of the way. Alternatively, head to San Setto for sushi and sake or The Bistro, where you can partake of breakfast, lunch and dinner on the oceanfront terrace. Wood-fired pizzas, sublime burgers and garden-fresh salads and the like will please everyone of every age. When you’re ready to unwind, choose from poolside cocktails at Haskell’s Bar, local labels and light bites at Bacara Wine Tasting Room and Bar de Vino, fine tobacco and spirits at Cohiba Cigar Lounge.
That may include your pet, as the hotel prides itself (it’s California) on being extremely animal-friendly. It will cost you a pretty penny to include them on your perfect vacation, but once here, four-legged friends (max two per room) can even join you on the restaurant terraces at mealtime.
So, you’ll need to select a room to accommodate all. And, of course, we love the rooms with club access.
