"Distinctive and unique in every conceivable way, the Opposite House makes for a memorable stay with its chic minimalist sophistication, delightful dining and a stainless steel swimming pool."

If hotels with distinctive design, inside and out, are what you veer towards every time, The Opposite House in Beijing certainly stands out from the crowd. It has a unique sense of style and takes after its namesake – a guesthouse which stands on the opposite side of a traditional courtyard home. Within this distinct hotel, you’ll find a beautiful blend of both the contemporary and the cherished of yesteryear.

The man behind the dramatic look is prominent architect and interior designer Kengo Kuma. The striking glass exterior, which is inspired by traditional Chinese wood lattice, is a vision of emerald green, a colour chosen to represent the feeling of calm you’ll have upon entering this haven.

Inside, spaces flow and blend seamlessly, and the atrium of the hotel is rather special. Here, the conventions of usual hotel activity are challenged and blurred: there is no reception desk, so as to offer a sense of tranquillity and freedom. The contemporary art collection that adorns the space invites guests to explore; it changes on a quarterly basis to include all kinds of installations, from sculptures to textile pieces.

Across all the guest studios and suites there is an uncluttered, open design layout that creates minimalist sophistication. High ceilings and plenty of natural light enhance the feeling of space, and the wood used throughout offers a sense of warmth. There’s also a Penthouse suite that spans two floors.

Restaurants and bars here serve a variety of delights. Jing Yaa Tang is excellent for Chinese cuisine, especially fresh fish and seafood as well as a selection of dishes inspired by Beijing’s famous roast duck. Unwind with Szechuan street food and creative cocktails at Superfly, share small plates and stories over drinks at the chic Union bar or head to Frasca for casual Italian cuisine.

When it’s time to completely unwind, head to the 22-metre stainless steel swimming pool, lit in a way that plays with the reflections on the metal walls. It’s the epitome of urban chic. You can also relax with poolside yoga sessions and in-room massages.
