Dozens of pavilions and villas sprawl over the resort’s 20 lush acres, which are adorned with waterfalls, flower gardens, lily ponds and original sculptures. Under traditional thatched roofs, accommodations are serene and pretty, with four-poster beds, cane and bamboo furniture and full-wall windows that let in marvellous views. Private outdoor spaces are as pretty as can be; at a minimum, you’ll have a private terrace, while nicer rooms have both private gardens and pools. The sunken marble bathrooms with garden views are quite a treat as well.
The dining scene at the Oberoi is inspired largely by regional flavours – expect fabulously fresh seafood, local produce and dishes featuring herbs from the resort’s verdant garden. There’s a good assortment of options depending on your mood. The Restaurant boasts a lavish breakfast in the morning and serves an inspired blend of Indian, Creole and international cuisines in the evening. For a romantic night, dine in the 18th-century Gunpowder Room which has been transformed into a rustic, old-world feeling restaurant, or consider a communal al fresco meal by the underground fire pit and smokehouse of the Herb Trail. If you want something a bit more casual (or just a slice of pizza), the beachside On the Rocks will have you covered. End your evening by watching the sunset over the ocean – with a cocktail in hand – at The Bar.
The Oberoi has all the offerings you’d expect from a high-calibre resort: scuba diving, watersports, a lovely spa and so on. More notable is its range of bespoke experiences, particularly a collection called “Touching Senses.” These activities encourage one to connect with their inner self through all manner of mediums: stargazing, Hatha Yoga, breathing exercises, sculpture classes and T’ai Chi, to name a few. You can also take a painting class, visit a silversmith or try your hand at cooking. Attend a wine tasting, while you’re at it, or a rum tasting. Better yet, take both – whatever you need to find your bliss.
