"A luxurious boutique hotel set just five blocks from the White House, The Jefferson boasts sumptuous rooms, Michelin-starred dining and a chic cocktail bar."

If you’re visiting Washington, D.C. to explore the rich history of the nation’s capital, you’ll be well suited to a stay at The Jefferson. A luxurious boutique hotel set in a 1920s building just five blocks from the White House, the Jefferson is a homage to the founding father who shares its name. Both Thomas Jefferson’s and the country’s histories are woven through the entire hotel, from framed historical documents bearing Jefferson’s signature in the lobby to custom-built replicas of the furniture from his home. The whole hotel is elegant and classical, and much of the grandeur comes from the Old World feel of it all. That said, when it comes to luxury, The Jefferson is perfectly contemporary.

The Hotel has a mere 99 accommodations with just a handful of room and suite options to choose from. The Hotel has a mere 99 accommodations with just a handful of room and suite options to choose from. Within the rooms – which vary in colour palette and style – you’ll find Jefferson-inspired artwork from the hotel owner’s personal collection, beautiful writing desks, lacquered wooden furniture and period pieces that are simply gorgeous. Amenities are abundant, as are thoughtful touches like complimentary newspaper service. Upgrade from entry-level to a Premier Room to stay in a “smart room”, where everything you need – from housekeeping to the privacy sign – can be triggered with the touch of a button.

As only seems fitting with a hotel of this stature, the first of its dining establishments is Michelin-starred. This exclusive fine dining restaurant, called Plume, is a beautiful, romantic venue in which traditional dishes inspired by Jefferson’s Monticello gardens are wonderfully reimagined. Do note that Plume can be hard to get into; you’ll want to call well in advance to make a reservation. For something more casual, The Greenhouse serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Its dining room rests beneath a brilliant skylight and the atmosphere is regal while still being warm and relaxed. And then, of course, there’s Quill: a posh bar and lounge that has a seductive ambience and a killer cocktail list.

The Petite Spa is a darling, light-filled affair that feels like it was plucked from a noble woman’s country home. There, a lovely assortment of treatments use botanicals from the Monticello gardens. There’s also a well-equipped fitness centre that remains open 24 hours a day, and guests have complimentary access to the University Club’s pool which is directly across the street.
