"A Venetian Gothic masterpiece that’s a go-to for visiting glitterati, the ultra-sumptuous Gritti Palace is resplendent with priceless art and boasts one of the city’s most beautiful restaurants"

Posing an elegant facade on Venice’s Grand Canal since 1475, the palazzo – today’s Gritti Palace – served as the residence of the Gritti family and its most famous member, the 16th-century Venetian doge Andrea Gritti. Fast-forward nearly five and a half centuries, and this Venetian Gothic palace has lost none of its allure; it’s the ‘go-to’ place for celebs and the social elite who come to Venice. Only a five-minute walk from St Mark’s Square, there’s a Vaporetto stop close by for those going anywhere else.

In recent years, the hotel underwent a gargantuan renovation and today boasts some of the most sumptuous, most romantic, interiors in the city with priceless art, frescos and exquisite antiques and Murano chandeliers throughout. Its location on the canal is second to none, and if you’re here in the summer months, make sure you have at least one meal on the iconic Gritti Terrace. The views over the canal onto the magnificent Salute basilica as gondolas glide by are the stuff of dreams.

Speaking of dreams, make yours come true in one of the 82 rooms and suites. You’ll want to binge a bit, and make sure you book a room that’s canal-facing for majestic views from floor-to-ceiling windows. Some have balconies, and all have mod-cons that belie the building’s age. Bathrooms are small, but they’re appointed in white marble and come with delicious Aqua di Parma amenities.

By contrast, the lovely little spa here uses France’s Sisley products for their stellar treatments, and there’s a stream bath available to help you take the edge off a hard day out sightseeing. There’s also a fitness suite with the latest Technogym equipment for those who can’t miss a workout.

Dining in Venice can be a hit-or-miss affair, but not so here. Start with a cocktail in the Bar Longhi followed by a meal in The Riva Lounge or, if you’re lucky, The Club Del Doges. It’s one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city, with food to match. Dine outside in good weather; inside or out, the service is as good as the food.

Should you wish to learn how it’s done, sign up for The Gritti Epicurean School which leaves the hotel with the chef in the early morning to get the very best the markets have to offer that day. Don’t worry, you’ll stop along the way for a caffè, and an aperitivo on the way back.
