The Greenwich is an intimate and cosy boutique hotel in the Tribeca neighbourhood of New York, the epitome of downtown cool with trendy restaurants, chic bars and independent shops, blissfully secluded from the main tourist trail. The spa, bar and garden are reserved exclusively for guests too.

Often overlooked as a place to stay in the city (with many holidaymakers opting for midtown), in Tribeca you’ll feel less hemmed in. It has a buzz and vibe of its own. Of course it does, as Robert De Niro – a true advocate of the district – co-founded The Greenwich Hotel. It’s a great little hideaway on the corner of Greenwich Street, and not far from De Niro’s other ventures: the Tribeca Grill, the Tribeca Film Center and Nobu restaurant.
If you have an eagle eye for design, you’ll appreciate the meticulous details. Behind the brown brick façade, there are exposed oak beams and antique wooden floors that set the stage for a blend of handcrafted embellishments created by a wide variety of artists and craftsmen from around the world. All this creates a unique décor and ambience. Cultural influences in the property’s 88 rooms and suites include silk rugs from Tibet and hand-laid bathroom tiles from Morocco, while creature comforts include Nespresso machines and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi.

You’ll find lots of interesting places, including the Shibui Spa, where you can enjoy a Japanese-inspired treatment and take a dip in the lantern-lit swimming pool. Relaxing in the lounge under the roof of a 250-year-old wooden and bamboo farmhouse imported from Japan is pretty awesome. There are also yoga and pilates sessions, while personal training is available at the fitness studio. Otherwise, head out to the open-air courtyard area which is only open to guests, and is the perfect sanctuary to enjoy drinks after a day of sightseeing or shopping.

When you’re ready for something to eat, Italian food lovers will appreciate Locanda Verde. It’s great for casual dining, and celebrated chef Andrew Carmellini’s menu includes antipasti and dishes like homemade lamb Bolognese and porchetta sandwiches. Open morning, noon and night, it’s popular with locals and guests alike, so do book a table for dinner. For drinks, the guests-only Drawing Room Bar is an intimate and inviting spot.
