Since 1899, this glorious Zurich landmark, The Dolder Grand, has been welcoming guests – famous, notorious and otherwise – into her heart and into her arms. In 2008, this modern resort with its discreet past was reopened after a major rebuild, restoring it to its glory days – and then some.

The result? The beautiful main building with its distinct turrets on the outside and its marble columns, sweeping staircases and impressive collection of art and artwork once again boasts its original grandeur, with the addition of everything else needed to meet modern-day demands.

With 173 rooms and suites, the Norman Foster wings added much to the hotel’s footprint. Rooms in the main building are opulent, and those in the new wing are more modern and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows to optimise views. Bathrooms are finished in white marble with a bath, a shower with side jets, fluffy robes and Kerstin Florian amenities.

Unless it’s a Sunday, in which case you won’t want to miss brunch at the very modern Salz restaurant. The crowning glory here, however, is The Restaurant, headed by two-Michelin-starred Heiko Nieder who not only sends chocolates to your room, but creates six and ten-course menus that take you on an adventure, a true ‘round the world journey. Make sure you book in advance.

Getting here is a breeze. There are trams and funiculars to get to the property, after which you can avail yourself of the hotel’s shuttle service which will take you in and out of town as often as you want, or not. We say ‘not’ because there’s so much to keep you here, including the elliptical 25-metre indoor pool, an award-winning spa, a golf course, tennis courts and ice rink in the winter. With lake and alpine views all around, you may opt for a bike ride on one of the hotel’s mountain bikes. After all, did you come here to work?
