You wouldn’t come to Bilbao without plans to visit the Guggenheim and others to luxuriate in the vast choice of pintxos, readily available almost everywhere here in town. So when it comes to a choice of where to stay, you’d be hard-pressed to find better-situated digs than the Artist Hotel Bilbao which is – literally – situated right next door to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

This is a modern, stylish and design-forward hotel, as befitting a property that’s located adjacent to a modern arts mecca. There are several very cool features here within (well suitable for selfies), including a vast tower made of rocks that sits below the blue-domed ceiling, a staircase made of conch shells and countless, striking, boldly-coloured pieces of art. Otherwise, Sixty One, a bar on the lobby level, offers cocktails and delicious local wines at this hip, New York-style venue.

Rooms, all 145 of them, are not quite as snazzy as the public areas; they’re banal, really, unless you upgrade to a suite. But they are functional and comfortable and the ones facing the Guggenheim don’t disappoint. Bathrooms are nice, stocked with The White Company amenities, and Superior rooms feature a Phillipe Stark bathtub. Upgrade to a Deluxe if you want a Nespresso machine. Suites have colourful artwork on the walls, and some have terraces. Obviously, the Penthouse Suite is tops, with two bedrooms, butler service and round-the-clock edible goodies on offer.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in The Gallery as you gaze out over Jeff Koons’ flower-festooned 40-foot puppy which sits outside the museum and stares right at you. Later in the day, visit the museum, or go for a wander in this laid-back, waterside city. You’re an hour’s bus ride from San Sebastian, food capital of the world, but there are plenty of superb pintxos bars and dining hot spots here in Bilbao, not to mention the hotel’s own Beltz Restaurant. And then, there’s always the chance to see Athletic Bilbao in action at the San Mames Stadium, if you’re lucky. The concierge can help.

The hotel has a very nice gym (with a view) and a spa which features a Turkish Bath, a sauna and several treatment rooms.
