Decidedly one of the most outstanding hotels in the Bernese Oberland, the Alpina Gstaad is a glamorous and gracious retreat surrounded by the glory of the Swiss Alps. It’s set above Gstaad’s town centre and is about a ten-minute walk to all the happenings in the streets, the luxury boutiques and restaurants aplenty in this uber-chic destination. The hotel, a new-build that opened in 2012, is a very grand Swiss chalet, boasting a wooden, traditional exterior. In distinct contrast, interiors are avant-garde, fun and modern.

There are many highlights here, but the dining scene is remarkable. Aside from the three restaurants – Sommet, Megu and Swiss Stübli – on a sunny day in the middle of winter you can sit outside and enjoy a perfectly served high tea (or something stronger) while taking in the surrounding mountain views and breathing in the ultra-fresh air – it’ll be an afternoon you’ll never forget. When it comes to mealtimes, you can’t go wrong whichever venue you choose. Aside from the beauty of the restaurants themselves, the food and ambience are pretty spectacular. Don’t pass on the truffle and champagne fondue at the Swiss Stübli – worth the caloric overload on a grand scale.

The abundance of amenities and facilities here belies the fact that there are only 56 bedrooms and suites – large compared to others in town. Aside from the stunning views from whichever direction your room faces, a stone fireplace, a balcony, Acqua di Parma amenities and a Nespresso machine come as standard. Walls are covered in timber, and the high-quality furnishings, period hand-painted cabinets and local artefacts make for very handsome rooms.

Come nighttime, your room or suite (the Penthouse Suite if you’re looking to splurge) is just where you’ll want to be when it’s time to turn in, but not before you check out the stars in the sky from your balcony; you’ll have never seen so many before.

The spa here is definitely worth a visit. As the only Six Senses Spa in Switzerland, it offers an impressively long list of treatments and wellness therapies for those seeking ultimate pampering. Within are a hamman, a salt room, plunge pools and a gym where fitness classes and private training are available. There’s an indoor and an outdoor pool, the latter of which is open in the winter as well. No one will stop you if you wish to brave a dip al fresco when the thermometer plummets.
