Set on an island within the lake itself, the property enjoys an exceptional sense of privacy that is near impossible to find elsewhere in the city. Set as it is opposite the larger city palace, views from the property are utterly sublime. Decadence abounds within, and the accommodations are truly fit for royalty (as well they should be, given the hotel’s roots). Within, you’ll find just 65 rooms and a further 18 grand suites, a size which makes the palace feel all the more exclusive. The rooms themselves are utterly magnificent; deliciously over-the-top in a thoroughly enchanting way. Indeed, the interior design is impeccable: expect princely decor, intricate brocades, exquisite lattice work and ceilings that are either Araish in design or spectacularly painted. There is a good bit of variety from one room to the next as well; some, for example, feature decadent chaise lounges, four poster beds or exquisite stained glass windows. Do note that most – but not all – accommodations feature views of the lake – be sure to check in advance to ensure those stellar vistas.
The dining scene at the hotel is nothing short of spectacular, with enough options to make it a fine dining destination unto itself. To enjoy authentic renderings of Udaipur’s royal cuisine alongside dishes from across India, visit Neel Kamal. Open for dinner, this restaurant is set in a dazzling dining room that evokes images of a grand royal ball. Superb European cuisine and magnificent views can be enjoyed in a rooftop setting at the seasonal restaurant Bhairo, which is open during the winter months. For a more laid-back meal, visit Jharokha, which offers all-day dining and a menu of delicacies from around the world. After a lovely meal, stop by Amrit Sagar; the venue’s name means ‘sea of nectar’, and it’s here that you’ll find fabulous vintage wines and an excellent collection of cigars.
