Regal rooms are set in rich shades of maroons, mochas and gold, stylishly appointed with elegant furniture and local pottery. Rooms have the necessary mod cons, and marble-slab bathrooms aren’t groundbreaking but are pretty and comfortable. The views, however, are the rooms’ true showstoppers, and for that reason alone you should consider booking a room with a private balcony. Mind you, the balconies are neither large nor furnished, but those that face the valley offer some of the very best hotel views in the country.
Sumaq’s culinary offerings are spot-on, and the Peruvian cuisine offered throughout is consistently exemplary. For breakfast, visit the buffet or have eggs made to order; the first meal of the day is served in Qunuq Restaurant which opens early (5:30AM) and has gorgeous views of the river. You can return to the restaurant for lunch and dinner; for the latter, try the “Flavors of the Andes” tasting menu – the food is Peruvian at its very best and is a creative exploration of the region’s gastronomic traditions. In the evenings, visit Suquy Café and Bar. Views from the bar stun once again (this tends to be a theme at the hotel), and the exotic cocktails served there are expertly crafted.
Of course, you came to Peru to see Machu Picchu and the hike is bound to be a highlight of your stay. Recover from the journey in the hotel’s Aqlla Spa (its name is Quechna for “chosen one”), before venturing back out again. Visit the Mariposarium (the butterfly house), Aguas Calientes’ artisanal market or the Machu Picchu Museum. If you have about three hours to spare, pack a picnic and hike to Mandor valley for an unforgettable lunch among the waterfalls.
