Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi sits right in the heart of Hanoi’s romantic French Quarter, a spot it has occupied since its opening in 1901. Behind the building’s elegant Belle Epoque façade is a beautifully nostalgic hotel that has a reputation for being one of the capital city’s best.

The property has a staggering 364 rooms and suites, split between the Metropole and Opera Wings. In the former, classically elegant rooms reflect the building’s colonial roots, while streamlined and sophisticated rooms in the Opera Wing are far more contemporary. All are luxurious, with interiors tastefully decorated in French-Indochine style. Cream coloured walls contrast against rich wood floors and furnishings; pops of colour are provided by silk cushions and rugs, and plenty of natural light streams through tall and stately windows.

Le Beaulieu restaurant opened the same year as the hotel and was the very first French restaurant in Hanoi. It’s arguably the hotel’s best dining option and serves sophisticated meals complemented by a robust wine list. Le Beaulieu has a splendid Sunday brunch, or you can opt to visit the buffet breakfast served in the lounge for your first meal of the day. Traditional Vietnamese cuisine (with a French twist) can be found at Spices Garden, and you’ll have four bars to choose from for a postprandial drink. See and be seen at the chic Le Club Bar, or have a creative cocktail at the eclectic Angelina. For some quintessential Parisian romance, have a glass of wine al fresco at La Terrasse, a brasserie-style bar that somehow blends exceptionally well with the urban hustle and bustle of the surrounding city.

Le Spa du Metropole is stylish as can be, so much so that you’ll be enticed to linger in the waiting room post-massage. The bulk of the treatments are French in nature, but the menu also offers an Asian Heritage Collection with tantalising options like the “After Shopping Leg Reviver.”
