Situated within what was, once upon a time, a monastery, the Sina Villa Medici today is a stunning and unique hotel with just 99 rooms, antiques and artwork dotted here and there and a glorious garden and outdoor pool bang smack in the heart of Florence. Elegant and glamorous to the nth degree, it’s the sort of place that makes even the most jaded travellers feel a spring in their step coming on as they cross the threshold and enter the Belle Époque premises. Well known as a bolthole of the famous and fabulous, celebs including Luciano Pavarotti, the Shah of Persia and his wife, George Clooney, Tina Turner (and the list goes on) have once stayed within the four walls.

Entry-level rooms, called Superior, are small at 20 sq m, but you’ll have the choice of contemporary or classical styles. Top-of-the-line is the Royal Suite which is every bit as fabulous as it sounds, with precious antiques and works of art adorning the space.

Start the evening at the Jockey Bar (and by all means come back after dinner) for a preprandial libation before sitting down for a delicious dinner – outdoors, overlooking the pool if weather permits – at Il Giardino restaurant with some of the city’s finest fare and a heavenly wine list to wade through till you find the perfect vintage to pair with your meal (the sommelier can help).

Aside from the hotel pool, there’s a small spa, a fitness centre and a Finnish sauna and Turkish baths to enjoy. If you have kids in tow, the garden will come as a big plus and interconnecting rooms are available. And while the Via Il Prato may not be Florence’s most salubrious street, you’ll be just two blocks from the Arno from where you can amble down to the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi and the All Saints’ Church where Botticelli is buried. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants in the vicinity as well as ample shopping opportunities.
