"From above, the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa looks like something out of a movie. Families and couples each have their own space, and the abundant facilities are exceptional."

Set on a private beach that tumbles into the Gulf of Oman, its lush green lawns and gardens contrast starkly with the arid Hajar Mountains beyond. Two distinct wings make the resort an appealing getaway for travellers, while the dramatic landscape promises plenty of adventure on land or sea.

Al Bandar (which means “The Town '') will be the wing of choice if you and your partner are looking for a relaxing couple’s escape. If you’re travelling with little ones in tow, opt for a stay in the family-friendly Al Waha (“The Oasis”) which is Oman’s very first family-friendly hotel. Younger guests will delight in the myriad swimming pools that surround Al Waha, while those staying at Al Bandar will have the benefit of being close to the resorts’ many bars and restaurants. In both wings, guestrooms are stylistically similar: traditional Omani-inspired exteriors give way to pleasantly neutral interiors that are set in simple shades of sand, mocha and white. Floor-to-ceiling windows perfectly frame the lush landscape outside and allow plenty of light to stream into the generously sized rooms. Throughout, the Arabian-inspired design scheme is uncluttered and sophisticated, making the rooms relaxing havens to retire to at day’s end.

The resort’s fifteen restaurants and bars make it hard to choose at mealtimes – not that we’re complaining. Al Tanoor should be at the top of your list for its cuisine as well as its atmosphere. There, guests are treated to a spectacular array of Arabian dishes beneath eye-catching Omani tents. The restaurant Samba highlights flavours from around the world (think Mediterranean, Latin American, Asian and more) while Chow Mee’s southeast Asian street food absolutely delights the palette. If you can’t bear to eat indoors, the stylish Capri Court restaurant serves Italian cuisine just steps away from the sand. The night can continue al fresco at the trendy rooftop B.A.B. lounge which serves excellent cocktails in a vibrant environment with gorgeous views of the water.

Perks of the resort’s spa include ice fountains, tundra showers and the largest spa villas in Muscat, but you may find it hard to squeeze in a massage with everything else there is to see and do. Watersports and land excursions are just the beginning of what the resort has to offer, and guests can even participate in conservation efforts to protect the region’s endangered turtles.
