A relative newcomer to the city’s hospitality scene, Sapphire House Antwerp, Autograph Collection is a charming boutique hotel with an attractive address in the city centre. Though the hotel may be a new addition, the building itself is as steeped in history as the surrounding neighbourhood, tracing its storied roots back to the seventeenth century. Meticulously restored to its former glory, the hotel today pays homage to Antwerp’s glamorous Golden Age while simultaneously promising all the modern comforts its guests could ask for.

Behind the hotel’s historic façade, 139 rooms and suites draw interior design inspiration from a quartet of gemstones. Each space is themed in accordance with either Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire or Diamond, with the name and colour scheme to match. In all, expect high ceilings, tall windows and the room’s namesake jewel tones presenting in drapes, plush armchairs and other accents. Clever nods to gemstones are also found throughout the spaces: in the geometric floor patterning in one room, for example, or in the form of a diamond-shaped side table in another. Intriguing modern artwork lends a contemporary edge to the spaces, as do the crisp, clean lines of spacious bathrooms. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Diamond Suites are the property’s finest options, which feel more like luxurious private apartments than your standard hotel rooms. These compelling spaces are resplendent with traveller’s artefacts and unexpected design features, the most memorable of which include vaulted ceilings and magnificent exposed beams.

There is just one eatery within the hotel itself, though guests will want for little by way of culinary diversity thanks to the hundreds of restaurants that can be found within a kilometre of the hotel’s front door. Called PLANTn, the on-site restaurant is worth a visit, especially for those following plant-based diets (though meat enthusiasts will have options too). The menu is restrained yet delightful: think dishes like Bimi broccolini and beetroot & taleggio gnocchi alongside familiar favourites like pizza and burgers.

Sapphire House’s location is supremely walkable and brimming with things to do. Adjacent to the hotel is Handelsbeurs, the world’s first stock exchange, and the heart of Antwerp’s Old Town is just a stone’s throw away. Also close at hand is the city’s vibrant (and fashionable) shopping scene, alongside an impressive array of restaurants and many examples of the fabulous architecture for which the city is so beloved.
