Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located next door to the entrance of the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu. Stay here, and you will have the advantage of being able to visit the site pre and post the tour bus groups for a more serene experience.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu has been voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This is a sacred place where mist-filled sunrises and mystical moonlit nights create spectacular magic across the surrounding valley.

If you want to arrive here in true style, take the Belmond Hiram Bingham luxury train from Cusco to the colourful town of Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu. It takes around three and a half hours and passes through beautiful countryside and mountain terrain. When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you’ll be escorted to a bus for the 30-minute drive up the mountainside to the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge.

Here, there are magnificent gardens filled with orchids that attract a range of beautiful butterflies and birds and offer stunning views across Machu Picchu. Enjoy your breakfast outdoors, toast your stay with a glass of champagne or simply enjoy the relaxation area.

Boutique in feel, there are just 31 rooms and suites at the lodge, purposefully made for unwinding and each reflecting the casual, intimate atmosphere of the environment. Many of the rooms have amazing views of the mountains and most have a furnished terrace – all are cosy.

The lodge’s light and airy restaurant, Tampu, serves international cuisine and Andean specialities to a backdrop of wonderful views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Before you leave, make sure you try local delicacies including the Oxapampa cheese and palm heart. There’s also the Tampu Bar, the perfect place to relax in the evenings with a pisco sour as you swap stories of your Andean adventures with fellow guests.

And, just because you’re up with the Gods, so to speak, and away from the town life below doesn’t mean that you’ll be stuck for things to do. Whilst activities are low key, Belmond Sanctuary Lodge offers a range of massages.
