In 1976, Puente Romano Marbella opened in Malaga, becoming one of the Spanish city’s very first luxury properties. Situated in a posh residential area between Marbella and Puerto Banus, the resort remains one of the region’s most enviable getaways. Set right on the glittering coastline, the beachfront bolthole feels more like a village than your typical resort, and the combination of traditional Andalucian charm with modern luxury creates an unpretentious (yet utterly fabulous) vibe that makes the place feel like a little slice of heaven against a jaw-dropping background of mountains, sea and sky.

Understated luxury is the name of the game in the whitewashed suites and villas that dot the resort’s sprawling grounds. You’ll have quite a few options to choose from, but across the board, you can expect picture-perfect spaces that expertly blend regional personality with sleek contemporary elegance. White, sand and taupe dominate the pleasantly neutral colour scheme; the shades and patterns of virtually every detail are coordinated to an impressive degree of perfection. Natural light floods the rooms from floor-to-ceiling windows; push them open to step out onto your private terrace, complete with cosy furniture and the smell of rosemary.

Your first dinner at the resort should be at Nobu; a meal there is every bit as fabulous as one would expect from the master of Japanese-Peruvian fusion. You’re likely to be tempted to dine there a second time (and quite possibly a third), but the range of cuisines offered at the hotel is impressive, and you’ll certainly want to explore. Don’t pass up an opportunity for reimagined Andalusian classics as dreamt up by triple-Michelin-starred chef Dani Garcia (at the restaurant that shares his name), or the chance to dine on edible origami at Thai Gallery. If you’re in the mood for seafood and sangria (or just for a really killer mojito), the Mediterranean beach club El Chiringuito should be next on your list. Have an authentic Italian dinner date at Serafina (along with with some excellent wine), or a lazy pizza break at Pizza Romano. Wind down an evening (or begin one) to the sound of live music in La Plaza, the spirited heart of the resort.

The nature-inspired Six Senses Spa is an oasis of tranquillity complete with hydrotherapy pool, ice shower and three treatment rooms overlooking the ocean. Indulgent treatments use sea salt, olive oil, and herbs that grow in the nearby mountains for pampering sessions that feel entirely, quintessentially Mediterranean.
