Set on Lisbon’s historic Praça do Comércio, Pousada de Lisboa is as much a boutique hotel as it is a work of art. Instantly recognisable with its sunny yellow exteriors, the hotel is an exemplary blend of art, heritage and culture, tied together with an exquisite dash of contemporary design.

Step inside the 18th-century building (which is a heritage-listed structure) and be enveloped by the vibrant imagination of Brazilian architect Jaime Morais. The building's legacy is masterfully interwoven with contemporary culture; modern artwork is displayed alongside priceless pieces on loan from local museums. We don't think we could ever tire of just looking around the hotel; from its vaulted ceilings to its elegant candelabras, the interior design is truly something special.

Rooms, by contrast, are pleasantly restrained. Classically elegant, they combine hushed tones with clean lines and parquet floors to create stylishly minimalist spaces. Marble bathrooms are equally sleek, and many accommodations have lovely views overlooking the square. The exceptions to the ivory, grey and soft olive rooms are a handful of the top-level suites. The Suite Áurea and the Presidential Suite, in particular, are vast wood-panelled affairs that hearken back to the building’s stately, historical roots.

Though its name leaves little to the imagination as to what its specialities are, RIB Beef & Wine is open for all meals of the day. Succulent dishes are served under the restaurant’s gorgeous vaulted ceilings, and – despite its carnivorous appeal – there are good vegetarian options as well. There is a convivial bar area attached to the restaurant with views out onto the street – perfect for people watching with a glass of vino tinto in hand.

Pousada de Lisboa has a good assortment of facilities, including a small spa, fitness centre and an indoor swimming pool. You'll likely want to spend more time out of the hotel than in it, though, given how much there is to explore nearby. The immediate area is brimming with shopping, nightlife and cultural attractions – the hotel can organise tours for you of must-sees such as Lisbon Cathedral and the Romanas Galleries. As the hotel is right in the heart of historical Lisbon, you'll have no shortage of things to do, but be sure to leave a little time to visit A Brasilera which opened in 1782 and is the city’s oldest café.
