A romantic escape in the heart of Stone Town, the dreamy Park Hyatt is Zanzibar at its finest. The East African Island is picturesque as can be, and the hotel is equally so thanks to its magnificent location on a white sand beach overlooking the water. And then there is the charm of the hotel itself which is set in a meticulously restored mid-19th century mansion just moments away from some of the town’s most prized attractions, including Forodhani Gardens, the Old Fort and the Palace Museum.

The boutique Park Hyatt has just 67 guestrooms, eleven of which are suites. All are wonderfully elegant in an effortless sort of way and are set in shades of cream and sand. Canopy beds elevate the mood of the rooms (even the twin-sized beds are canopies) and are draped in swaths of pearly fabric. While the lines of the rooms are undoubtedly contemporary, regional accents and a hint of Arabesque grandeur create a sense of timelessness. As lovely as Stone Town is to look at, we recommend booking a room with an ocean-facing terrace; the views use of the dhow harbours and the Indian Ocean will take your breath away.

The food and drink scene at the hotel is fabulous, and the simplicity of the restaurant Dining Room’s name belies its excellence. Channelling all the charisma (and beauty) of a traditional Omani colonial home, this restaurant is equal parts inviting and opulent with a welcoming atmosphere, convivial communal tables and splendid seafood – locally caught, of course. The Living Room (we sense a trend here) has a lounge-like atmosphere and is an inviting spot for a cup of coffee, while The Library & Veranda is a sophisticated spot for a cocktail and gorgeous views of the water. Last but not least is The Pool Lounge which is perfectly placed for enjoying a light lunch without having to leave the comfort of your poolside lounger.

Speaking of poolside loungers, the oceanfront infinity pool is gorgeous – if a touch small. There’s also a tranquil spa and a reasonably well-equipped fitness centre if you can find the time (and inclination) to get in a workout between excursions in the vibrant town that’s right outside the door.
