Switzerland’s Vitznau occupies a particularly beautiful corner of the world. Settled at the foot of Rigi Mountain and on the banks of Lake Lucerne, the region is breathtakingly beautiful, enchanting both travellers seeking serenity as well as those in search of alpine adventure. Though you’ll find plenty of hotels in the area, one stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to sheer luxuriousness. This is Park Hotel Vitznau, a magnificently romantic escape perched right on the lake’s glittering waters.

Old meets new within an elegant historical building, and timeless charm is preserved in guestrooms that radiate an artsy, contemporary sophistication. Each of the hotel’s 48 junior suites, suites and residences is individually designed, and each draws its inspiration from one of three themes: Wine & Dine, Art & Culture or Health & Wealth. Start by choosing between Lake View and Mountain View: while both are lovely, vistas from the former are more memorable.

The chess-themed, Claude Verlinde-inspired Jeu D'Echecs Junior Suite is an artistic fantasy of patterned black & white, while the Harvard suite feels more suave and old-school. Sharpe – named after the 1990 Nobel Prize winner – offers minimalist perfection set in ivory, aqua and wood, while those travelling with little ones should book the delightfully playful Vienna Children’s Theatre. Most importantly, all accommodations have private balconies or loggias for enjoying the fresh air (and accompanying views).

Of the hotel’s restaurants, the two-Michelin-starred Restaurant Focus Atelier is undoubtedly the best. There, regional produce is used in creative, internationally-inspired dishes that are constantly surprising – in the best of ways. Though Focus is the culinary showstopper, the innovative convocations at the one-starred European-Asian PRISMA are nothing to sneeze at – and the 180º panoramic views found there don’t hurt either. After dinner, head to the oh-so-elegant Verlinde Armagnac & Cognac Bar for a cigar or to sample one (or two, or three) of over 200 vintage Armagnacs and Cognacs. The Wine Cellar – one of Switzerland’s largest – is also well worth a visit.

The hotel’s sleek appeal extends to its wellness facilities, from its picture-perfect outdoor infinity pool to its ultramodern spa. At the latter, you’ll be greeted by a 12-metre long saltwater aquarium, beyond which you’ll find everything you could possibly need to recharge: from foot baths and a Sanarium to (our personal favourite) an in-spa ice grotto.
