An idyllic escape set on the picturesque Amalfi Coast, Palazzo Avino looks like a fairytale come to life. Residing in what was once a 12th-century private residence of Italian nobility, the hotel has been meticulously and lovingly restored throughout the centuries, finally opening as a hotel in 1997. Its clifftop location, Michelin-starred dining and romantic, timeless aesthetic make it one of the finest hotels in the region – and undoubtedly one of the most picturesque.

The boutique hotel boasts just 33 rooms and 10 suites, lending an intimate, exclusive air to the property. Within, contemporary luxury mingles with preserved elements of a bygone era: grandiose vaulted ceilings and timeless treasures combine with clean lines and contemporary design sensibilities to create an exquisite old-meets-new atmosphere. Around three-quarters of the accommodations have sea views – do note that not all of these are full sea views – and so it's well worth the upgrade to secure those Mediterranean vistas. Vietri tile floors, crisp white walls, velvet accents and 19th-century antiques create a distinct sense of place that is wonderfully refreshing in its elegant simplicity.

Each day begins in a magical fashion with a lavish buffet breakfast overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. The Michelin-starred Rossellini’s is a culinary masterpiece that's open for dinner only – be sure to make a reservation in advance, as this restaurant is not to be missed. There, tantalising dishes are served either a la carte or from a dazzling tasting menu, all focused on authentic yet innovative Italian cuisine, and a smashing wine list is the cherry on top. For an unforgettable meal, book the Chef’s Table, which offers a perfect view of the kitchen and a custom tasting menu, or the Sommelier's Table in the wine cave. For live piano and an early-evening libation, visit Caffé dell’Arte where you can indulge in an exceptional cocktail or sample one of the bar’s rare liqueurs. If you are particularly fond of martinis, the Lobster and Martini Bar will delight; this venue boasts over a hundred iterations of the classic cocktail to go with supremely fresh local lobster and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. Also enjoying those coastline views is Terrazza Belvedere, where you'll find a delectable menu of fresh pasta dishes and small bites.

There's an air of magic that permeates all of Palazzo Avino, and the hotel’s spa is no exception. Set in the property’s gardens overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, this graceful space offers organic treatments in a tranquil atmosphere.
