Palacio del Inka, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Cusco
About the hotel

"A museum of a hotel in the heart of the city’s historic centre, Palacio del Inka boasts timeless suites, marvellous wine and a fantastic patio on which to enjoy it."
Almost 600 years after it was built, the Palacio is efficiently managed today by Marriott as part of their Luxury Hotel Collection. Starting its life as part of the Inkan Palace of the Sun built by ruler (and later Emperor) Inka Pachacuti (resurrected by Civilization video games) who’s also credited with founding the site of Machu Picchu, the building was later claimed and rebuilt upon by the Spaniards when they seized Cusco in 1533.

The property today is a fascinating blend of Inkan, colonial and modern-day mods cons. If you were to ignore your internal geolocator, you would almost swear for a minute you were in a Spanish Parador hotel (with much better food). Oozing Iberian charm, the stone arches, courtyards and balconies of this Peruvian beauty are very attractive, and ornate hues and colours grace the reception areas and bedrooms.
If you’re not hiking the Andes, you may wish to avail yourself of the fitness equipment at the hotel’s small, but well-appointed, gym. There’s also a spa on the premises which promises many moments of pampering, including the use of the hydrotherapy pool and Turkish baths which may help soothe tired and overstretched muscles after a long day out at Machu Picchu.
Have at least one meal other than breakfast (it’s a buffet with live harp music) here at the hotel. If weather permits, eat out on the romantic patio at Inti Raymi Restaurant, which serves authentic Peruvian cuisine. And since there’s a super-smart sommelier on hand, you should swirl and sniff something local. Peru has been producing wine since the Spanish invasion and has some decent varieties that are worth trying – if only to celebrate the country’s wondrous history and the fact that you finally made it here to experience all its glory. If cocktails are more to your taste, try the Pisco Sour at Rumi, the hotel bar with an original Inca wall. Weekly mixology classes, tastings and cooking classes are available for culinary enthusiasts.
