Otahuna Lodge
About the hotel
"Set in a picture-perfect 1895 Victorian Mansion just thirty minutes from Christchurch, Otahuna Lodge boasts just seven suites alongside superb dining and 30 acres of truly magical grounds."
Nineteenth-century grandeur in the form of architectural details like stained glass windows and period woodwork combine with contemporary comforts aplenty at the lodge, and nowhere is this more evident than in the property’s seven suites. Nineteenth-century grandeur in the form of architectural details like stained glass windows and period woodwork combine with contemporary comforts aplenty at the lodge, and nowhere is this more evident than in the property’s seven suites. Period furniture, gingham accents and cheerfully patterned wallpaper and upholstery set a charming stage, while plenty of gorgeous wood and wood-burning fireplaces suffuse the spaces with a cosy glow. Modcons are perfectly contemporary: think complimentary laundry service and spacious bathrooms with heated floors and large baths alongside separate walk-in showers. Floral arrangements from the lodge’s own cutting gardens are a lovely touch. Upgrade from a Suite to a Master Suite for your own private balcony or verandah with sweeping garden views, or go all-out with a group and book the entire Otahuna Lodge to have the extravagant villa all to yourselves.
The lodge’s ultra-exclusive size cloaks the entire place with an air of intimacy and a convivial ambience that is especially enjoyable in the grand Dining Room. It’s there that you’ll find Otahuna Lodge Restaurant, which is spearheaded by Chef Jimmy McIntyre and is a masterful ode to seasonal New Zealand cuisine. Dinner is typically presented in the form of five small courses, and daily-changing menus are matched with New Zealand wines. An impressive seventy percent of produce used comes from Otahuna’s own glasshouses, orchards, farm and gardens, so everything, needless to say, is spectacularly fresh. Should you prefer a more private experience, you can dine just about anywhere your heart desires: in the library, in the turret room or al fresco by the pool. Do be sure to pop by for pre-dinner drinks, though, as it's a lovely forum in which to socialise with other guests.
Guests can easily spend the entirety of their stay wandering the lodge’s magical grounds: strolling woodland trails, foraging for mushrooms or marvelling at the one million daffodils that appear each spring. Guests seeking a little more excitement, however, will have plenty to do within two hours of the lodge, whether that takes the form of swimming with the world’s smallest dolphins, picnicking on glaciated mountains or driving along the crater rim of an extinct volcano.

Otahuna’s two Master Suites are the property’s largest accommodations, enjoying wood-burning fireplaces, exquisite architectural detailing, sweeping outdoor terraces and exceptional views.
- Originally the master bedroom, the Rhodes Suite is actually a series of four rooms which embodies the gracious character of Sir Heaton and Jessie Rhodes. The palatial bedroom boasts a magnificent Victorian fireplace with inglenook seating and stained glass windows. A separate octagonal sitting room situated in the turret is the perfect spot to read a book, work a jigsaw puzzle, enjoy a quiet candlelit dinner or simply gaze out to the gardens.
- Epitomising the phrase “room with a view,” the Verandah Suite is the perfect base from which to start exploring Canterbury. Four doors open onto an enormous arched verandah, reserved exclusively for the suite. Here, guests may quietly contemplate the birdsong from the gardens, or toast with a glass of champagne as the sun sets across the Canterbury Plains behind the Southern Alps.

Each of Otahuna’s five Suites is a supremely comfortable retreat offering room-specific design, New Zealand artworks and charming views onto the property’s celebrated gardens.
- The Botanical Suite is situated in the original Morning Room of the house, where tea was served to Jessie Rhodes and other fine Canterbury ladies every day at 11 o’clock sharp. A floor-to-ceiling mantle featuring gingerbread woodwork and a wood-burning fireplace anchors one corner of the room. In another, an enormous bay window faces east to the gardens and receives bright sunlight through painted glass in the mornings.
- Named for the Lady of the House, Jessie Clark, the Clark Suite was Jessie's former bedroom and enjoys views of the woodlands through its exquisite leadlighted windows. The soft yellows and blues of this classic suite draw their inspiration from the expansive stained glass, tiled fireplace and traditional English country ambience of the estate.
- The Jockey Jones Suite represents the culmination of the Otahuna interior aesthetic. This very special collection of rooms overlooks the Herb Garden, the terracotta roof of the Wine Cellar and the woodland beyond. Inside, discover a bedroom clad in a chic 18th-century Pierre Frey wallcovering, a spacious sitting room with a sofa that can accommodate an extra guest, a striking collection of modern art by two emerging New Zealand artists and the ultimate in indulgence: two separate bathrooms.
- So named for the tradition of the game at Otahuna, the Polo Suite occupies a sunny position at the front of the house overlooking a courtyard on one side and the Great Lawn on the other. Heaton played regularly on the lawn, which had to be mown by horses wearing special leather shoes.
- The Loft is a masterpiece of design perched at the highest point of the Lodge. This very special enclave inspires the imagination with its dramatically-scaled headboard clad in a vintage Schumacher Chinoiserie fabric, a collection of art commissioned exclusively for the Suite and numerous decorative touches which playfully highlight the Lodge's century-old heritage. The brightly painted timber-clad walls and fresh green tones found in the design complement sweeping views across the Great Lawn and all the way to New Zealand's Southern Alps.
