Olissippo Lapa Palace, Lisbon
About the hotel
"An opulent hotel situated in Lisbon’s most enviable neighbourhood, the 19th-century Olissippo Lapa Palace stuns with decadent rooms, romantic dining and a posh spa."
The hotel accentuates its subtropical paradise surroundings with cascading waterfalls, fountains and lush greenery throughout the property. Inside, it is resplendent with all things luxe and lovely; marble, rich fabrics and antiques are everywhere, as are gorgeous hand-painted murals and ceilings.
There are 109 rooms, divided between three wings, and all are decadent and spacious. Some are carpeted, others have parquet flooring, and many have private balconies with lovely views of the grounds. Bathrooms have soaking tubs and fresh flowers, and the hotel has a library of films which can be borrowed and enjoyed in-room and some (ask first) come with coffee makers. The top floor of the original palace building has the choicest suites: some have four-poster beds and the gem of the lot – the Tower Suite – is lavish to the point of excess (in the best of ways). The suite has two private balconies – one of which sits atop a turret – and a spectacular view that the hotel deems the “guaranteed best view of Lisbon” – they aren’t wrong.
The gorgeous, chandelier-heavy Lapa Restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean fare in a fairytale-esque dining room. The Rio Tejo Bar serves afternoon tea with dozens of blends and has live piano music in the evenings (when tea transitions to cocktails). At the poolside Le Pavillion, you’ll find tasty light dishes, and a buffet breakfast comes complimentary.
In addition to the heated outdoor pool, an indoor pool is located at the upscale spa, which has a fabulous menu of treatments including chromotherapy and aromatic baths. The fitness centre you’ll find there is also well-equipped.
Lapa – the stomping ground of ambassadors – is a residential area, but a twenty-minute walk will get you to the waterfront and the lively Time Out Market. The historic Belém area (and plenty of shopping and dining) is also minutes away.
Children are welcome (and the hotel has a play area and kid’s pool), but the feel is definitely more romantic getaway than family vacation. Whomever you go with, you’re in for a lovely stay – it is a palace, after all.
