Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel, Cape Town
About the hotel
"The iconic Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is the rose-coloured grande dame of Cape Town, boasting elegant guestrooms, truly stellar dining and the city’s best spa."
Painted pink in 1918 to symbolise peace, visitors are still lured beyond the doorstep; they come to enjoy the hotel’s notorious and imaginative cuisine and the many facilities beneath the gaze of Table Mountain. Service is impeccable, and there are many restaurants, bars, shops and city sights just outside the gates.
Mount Nelson is a big hotel, where each of the 198 guestrooms and suites is individually styled and, while none of them offers sea or mountain views from the beds, the hotel is in a central, convenient location that makes life a dream come true. Mount Nelson is a big hotel, where each of the 198 guestrooms and suites is individually styled and, while none of them offers sea or mountain views from the beds, the hotel is in a central, convenient location that makes life a dream come true. Just across the street are the Company Gardens through which a delightful stroll will take you past museums and shaded lawns and into the bustling city centre. Kloof Street, with its trendy restaurants and bars, couldn’t be closer.
Or you may decide to stay put (and who could blame you?), as here you’ll find the most wonderful spa in the city and the best pool area (there are two), too – not to mention the restaurants and bars.
Don’t miss the chance to dine at the Lord Nelson Restaurant which has been welcoming guests since 1899 and offers fine dining under the realm of Chef Rudi Liebenberg who’s all about locally sourced produce. His Saturday 'Wasted' five-course menu made from the unwanted parts of fruits, vegetables, meat and fish is an adventure in eating you’ll never forget.
It's important to note that the East Wing of the hotel is a better choice when it comes to choosing a room. London-based interior designer Inge Moore Muza Lab oversaw the renovations of these contemporary and understated rooms which are elegant, slick and very comfortable. Marble bathrooms don’t disappoint, but if you’re looking for the ultimate retreat, the Garden Cottage Suites, complete with their own picket fence, are very special indeed.
By all means, bring the kids. South Africans by nature are loving and warm (and tolerant), and the child-friendly facilities here – heated pool, teen room, toddler care and a spa menu for little girls – make this hotel a parents' dream.
