Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort and Spa is the undisputed Grande Dame of Waikiki – which should come as no surprise, given that it was one of the very first hotels established on the now-legendary beach. Lovingly nicknamed the ‘First Lady of Waikiki’, the resort was inaugurated in 1901 and has played an important role in shaping the surrounding neighbourhood. The property’s Victorian elegance and historic charm have been lovingly maintained over the past century and change, while its contemporary amenities keep it perfectly modern as far as luxury is concerned.

A dizzying assortment of nearly two dozen types of accommodations account for the resort's whopping 793 rooms. Unsurprisingly – given the property’s size – the rooms are a touch lackluster as far as personality is concerned. Indeed, they border on feeling ever-so-slightly plain, though they are pleasant enough with their soothing neutral colour palettes and accents of rich wood and leather. It's well worth splurging for an ocean view accommodation – especially one kitted out with a private balcony.

A plethora of dining options await at mealtimes, with something for everyone regardless of palate or occasion. Beachhouse at the Moana is a refined option for contemporary oceanfront dining where you'll find dishes inspired by the island itself – the seafood is particularly good. Veranda at the Beachhouse offers more of those lovely ocean views in a marvellous Victorian environment and is the perfect spot for a breezy breakfast. Set even closer to the sand is the Beach Bar, which features live entertainment to go with its small plates and tropical cocktails, while health-conscious guests can visit Surfrider Café for an açai bowl or salad. Vintage 1901 is a wine-centric bar set in the hotel's historic lobby, which features live music courtesy of the resort’s resident pianist. Even after trying all of the on-site venues, you'll still have plenty of options – Moana guests have dining privileges at a trifecta of sister properties: the Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Waikiki and the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani.
