Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa, Ischia
About the hotel
"Set on a rocky promontory overlooking a secluded bay, Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa boasts tranquil accommodations and a magnificent spa."
Seven of the hotel’s suites are set in the ancient tower, as is the lobby and the spa. The remaining 50 rooms and suites are spread across the property, varying in both design and views; while the park is lovely to look at, we prefer the accommodations that have terraces overlooking the bay. Across the board, the aesthetic is sophisticated yet inviting, with a soothing palette of ivory, sand and taupe. The result is calming, but pops of colour from striped pillows and intriguing tapestries add a dash of playfulness to the tranquillity. A clever mix of materials also keeps the spaces interesting: from wicker chairs to gilded floor lamps, the spaces are chic yet serene. If privacy is... Show more

If privacy is paramount, opt for The Cottage; tucked into the woodlands, it feels blissfully secluded. Beautiful though they are, rooms are admittedly a bit disappointing when it comes to mod cons – especially the lack of coffee-making accoutrements which feels particularly un-Italian.
In-room coffee aside, food is a major highlight at Mezzatorre. La Torre Restaurant – the first of the hotel’s two eateries – is where you'll find the first meal of the day. Homemade breads, pastries and cheeses abound at the lavish breakfast buffet, while dinner Is a fine dining affair with succulent seafood dishes and flavourful Ischian specialities. The poolside La Baia restaurant is a more laid-back option – but still equally tasty – and the unobstructed sea views are particularly lovely in the evening. For more of those spellbinding views, head to Bar La Torre, where you can enjoy the breezy weather with a libation in hand beneath a playfully scalloped umbrella.
It's a 45-minute boat ride to Naples and 15 minutes more to Capri, but if you're keener on exploring nearby, you'll have the towns of Lacco Ameno and Forio within easy driving distance. If you'd rather stay put entirely, lounge about at the gorgeous cliffside swimming pool, or head to the dazzling spa. Housed in the 16th century Tower, the spa’s pools are heated by thermal springs, and the island of Ischia claims to be the oldest spa destination in the world.

In the park cottages you are amidst the oxygen rich pines and greenery, it is so peaceful, just the rustle of birds in trees and the hush of waves. Double deluxe rooms are more spacious. Interiors are designed with individuality, some have chequered Italian bathroom tiles, some light limestone, some feature ultra-modern basins, the unifying theme is elegance.

This corner of Mezzatorre exudes all the mystique that draws writers and directors to Ischia. Meander along quiet pine paths between the tower and your hideaway. Interiors are light and calm with a splash of Pellicano panache. The terrace is semi private, divided by more pretty verdure and fragrant plants, a delightful place to stretch out in the sun-blanched afternoon with an iced tisane, idling away an hour over backgammon with a friend or neighbour.

The park is peaceful, fresh and vivifying, just the tonic for a spell on this healing isle. Tower rooms give you a hint of the Mezzatorre 16th century history. Interiors are designed with flair by Il Pellicano’s unswervingly stylish Marie-Louise Sciò.

Step one way for a lovely light bedroom with a modern four poster, tiles edge wooden floors in a quietly modern take. Behind the bed is a ‘walk around dressing room’, in front of the bed is the superb sea view and your terrace which overlooks the whole Ischian bay. A canvas awning gives an impression of the prow of your ship. The terrace has a Jacuzzi, Ischia is a place of wellbeing, somewhere to soothe and revive, just give in. To one side of the terrace is a small look out post, where you can wave to friends at the beach restaurant, to the other side are steps down to a smaller private terrace, your private "pensatoio". You have a quietly stylish sitting room, bathroom with double vanity and a tub where you can soak by a picture window overlooking the sea, spectacular.

Hidden in the woodland park the cottage has been caught in the lens of Marie-Louise Sciò, Italian tastemaker and Pellicano’s own creative director. White washed beams pitch above the airy living space, with a floor to ceiling glass wall so the refreshing green woods appear as a living vivarium. A mezzanine floor with eaved ceilings stretches the width of the cottage; playroom, love nest what you will, it’s delightful. Below are two more light and airy ensuite bedrooms. The vast wooden decking is a chilled spot for lunch after a day playing in the Ischian bay. In the evenings clink cocktail ice as the cicadas strike up their hypnotic rattle and hum.
