Mandarin Oriental, Prague
About the hotel
"A serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Mandarin Oriental blends its historical roots with sleek modern decor in its unique guestrooms and tantalizing restaurant."
The hotel resides in what was once a Dominican Monastery, and the building’s historical roots shine through in a blend of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Arched doorways and vaulted ceilings soar above medieval artefacts showcased in glass cabinets, contrasting just so against modern art and Czech chandeliers. The eclectic design scheme works brilliantly, and the result is a uniquely memorable stay.

Arched doorways and vaulted ceilings soar above medieval artefacts showcased in glass cabinets, contrasting just so against modern art and Czech chandeliers. The eclectic design scheme works brilliantly, and the result is a uniquely memorable stay.
Rooms continue the old-meets-new aesthetic, combining stone doors and exposed beams with parquet floors and sleek modern decor. Despite having nearly a hundred rooms, the historical nature of the building means that no two are exactly the same. As such, you’ll have a vast assortment of room and suite options. Best among them are the cavernous Moser Crystal Suite – with its arched ceilings, baroque windows and Moser crystal decorations – and the Lobkowicz Suite, which feels more classically Czech with its stately decor and historical artwork. In all, spacious bathrooms have heated floors, and the rooms themselves are well-appointed with mod cons aplenty.
The unexpected architecture of Spices Restaurant and Bar’s dining room has a fascinating explanation – the space is comprised of five restored Renaissance townhouses to which it owes its varied design. It’s there that you’ll find a creative menu of Asian cuisine spanning everything from sashimi to tandoori. The Lounge and Terrace is a perfect spot for an al fresco cocktail on a sunny day, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better spot for a glass of champagne than beneath the arched brick ceiling of the Dom Pérignon P2 Cellar.
The hotel’s running club encourages guests to stay active, as do yoga classes, a pool and a sleek, well-equipped fitness centre. Contemplative moments are also encouraged; if the hotel itself is blissfully quiet, the monastery garden is heavenly so. Bring a book there and spend a quiet afternoon among the manicured lawns. Further relaxation can be found at the hotel’s lovely spa, a space that feels particularly special in that it houses the remains of a 14th-century gothic chapel.
