"Set in the heart of the city, the boutique Mandarin Oriental boasts inviting guestrooms, sublime dining and a rooftop terrace with some of the region’s best Munich views."

In the very heart of Munich stands a stately white building that has been a beacon of elegance since its completion in 1800. In the building’s younger years, lavish masquerade parties were hosted in its ballroom; over the ensuing centuries the building has taken on a number of roles: spending time as a politically divisive theatre, as lodging for a WWI battalion and – at one point – as a wool factory. In its current form, it’s home to the Mandarin Oriental, which offers some of the city’s finest luxury behind the Neo-Renaissance exterior that has remained pristinely gorgeous for more than 200 years.

The building’s legacy may be an old one, but a step inside reveals a hotel that is surprisingly contemporary – while still retaining the perfect dose of its timeless appeal. The building’s legacy may be an old one, but a step inside reveals a hotel that is surprisingly contemporary – while still retaining the perfect dose of its timeless appeal. With 48 rooms and 25 suites, the hotel has a posh boutique vibe with the amenities of a larger hotel. Warmly inviting rooms continue the blend of past and present, and cherry wood floors and furnishings are complemented by recurring hues of mocha, gold and cream. Bathrooms have heated floors and TVs, in case you fancy watching a film while you soak.

World-renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa is at the helm of the hotel’s restaurant – Matsuhisa Munich – which serves the excellent Japanese-Peruvian fusion for which he has become so acclaimed. For a more international meal, The Lounge serves an ever-changing menu of delightful dishes in addition to afternoon tea. The interior design of ultra-chic Ory bar is as avant-garde as the inspired cocktails it serves. Try “You, The Cat & Me” for an enticing blend of Tequila, unroasted coffee and sparkling coconut water.

The hotel’s lack of a spa is unfortunate, but there are options for facials and massages nearby, and the hotel does have a well-appointed fitness centre complete with swimming pool and computerised wellness assessments. Visit the rooftop terrace for one of the best views of Munich to be found; take them in with a coffee or cocktail in hand. The hotel’s posh location is primely located for exploring the city – just steps outside the front door is the legendary Hofbräuhaus: one of the world’s most well-known breweries, famed especially for its Oktoberfest celebrations. If your visit falls during the revelry, brave the crowds and go for a pint – the event is the largest folk festival in the world.
