An enchanting retreat near Bali’s cultural heart, Ubud, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is ensconced in lush rainforest and sits across a striking valley alongside the Ayung River. The setting is made for relaxation and seclusion, along with immersive experiences with local culture and nature, the same influences that guide every detail at the resort.

Service is highly personalised here, and the moment you arrive – marked by the strike of a traditional Balinese gong – you’ll be greeted by a personal butler and escorted to your suite or villa. Generous in size, these start at 1,075 sq ft (100 sq m) with views over the rainforest, rice paddies or river. They’re individually, beautifully decorated with Balinese art. They all have outdoor spaces – sometimes even a pool. You’ll be made to feel at home, which is the idea, and the 24-hour butler service is the icing on the cake.

There’s an intimate feel about the place, as well as a sacred ambience. Mandapas, which means ‘temples’ in Sanskrit, is an apt name for this Ritz-Carlton Reserve which is like a temple in its own right. Offering true sanctuary for those lucky enough to stay, guests find the simplest of activities a pleasure here, whether that's reading a good book in the library, taking a dip in the heated swimming pool or strolling through the beautiful grounds. Lots of more gentle activities are there for the taking, too, such as enjoying a bike ride or taking a vintage car to nearby villages. You could also head up to Mount Batur to watch the sunrise, but only if you can tear yourself away from your supremely comfortable bed and your surroundings so early in the day.

If you’ve come simply to find your inner peace – your mojo – as many do, booking into the spa is a must. Guided meditation, yoga and traditional healing sessions are a great place to begin, and treat yourself to some of the pampering ceremonies, rituals, facials and massages that can be enjoyed alone, or à deux.

Simply dining here is another way to connect with Balinese culture. The rice paddy fields around the resort grow the rice used for traditional meals in the restaurants, while vegetables come from the organic garden.
