Golden Square Mile in the heart of downtown Montreal is a bustling hub of Victorian architecture, lavish mansions and all the glitz and glamour that you’d expect. Set amongst the historic landmarks is the stately neoclassical building that houses Le Mount Stephen: a stunning boutique hotel that combines contemporary luxury with the timeless elegance of a bygone era.

Within the hotel are just ninety rooms and suites, all of which represent that striking fusion of old and new. The accommodations’ minimalist interior design features floor-to-ceiling windows, clever under bed lighting and a contemporary colour scheme set in neutral shades. Nods to Montreal's rich heritage present themselves in the accents: think tufted leather furniture, Old World art pieces and black and white framed prints on the walls. Mod cons are abundant throughout, especially in the bathrooms which feature chromotherapy rainforest showers and heated floors (some have stand alone bathtubs as well). At the top of the hotel’s room hierarchy is the impressive Royal Suite, which spans a staggering 465 square metres and comes equipped with a fireplace, panoramic ceilings and two private terraces that both boast stellar views of Montreal’s skyline.

The hotel’s fine dining restaurant is a thing to behold; indeed, we're hard-pressed to decide which we like better: the food or the dining room. Called Bar George, this eclectic establishment is set in a lavishly grand room that is a vision of ornate wood panelling (even on the ceilings), sleek chandeliers and opulent accents both contemporary and historic. The inspired menu is a contemporary take on classic U.K. cuisine, and creative dishes feel both playful and unique. Bar George is open for all meals of the day and is especially worth a visit for brunch on weekends.

MBIOSPA Prestige is Le Mount Stephen’s spa, which boasts a good variety of massage and facial treatments alongside nine “Signature Escapes,” each of which is an experiential multisensory treatment that promises ninety minutes of pure serenity. Beyond the spa, you won't find much to do within the hotel itself – not that you’d need it, given the abundance of things to do right outside. Indeed, Old Montreal is vibrant and enchanting with a delightful assortment of options for entertainment, food and drink – to speak nothing of its charming shops, public spaces and (of course) plethora of historic sites.
