Located on the “quiet” end of George Street, and overlooking one of Edinburgh’s prettiest private garden squares, Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel beautifully blends the old with the new. It’s just far enough away from the tourist sites to feel relaxed, but it’s just a minute’s walk to Princes Street, the start of New Town.

Made up of seven interconnected Georgian townhouses, expect – everywhere you look – to have your senses stimulated. Lots of polished wood furniture, vivid colours on the walls and in the fabrics, vibrant tartans here and there and unique antiques and artefacts are used to great effect throughout the property. You can’t help but be lured by the sheer charm everywhere you look and the warm service offered by the staff.

When 5 PM rolls around and thoughts turn to Afternoon Tea or something stronger, you’ll be welcomed at the glass-roofed The Garden, where, incidentally, breakfast is also served. It’s a pretty place – light and bright, unlike a lot of the city’s other hotel bars. Stay for a bite, or if you fancy something a little more exotic, head to the Levantine restaurant Baba where sharing plates are the order of the day in this open kitchen venue. The food is very nice, delicious even, and if you’re a vegan, vegetarian or devout carnivore, they have you covered, nicely. At Aizle, you can choose the six- or eight-course tasting menu for an evening of seasonal cuisine and house-made cocktails.

The pool here should not be overlooked. A few laps in the morning will have you raring to take on the day. There’s a spa and a small gym as well, should you find time for some downtime. Yoga mats are in the rooms, too, for a morning stretch or two before you take on the day.
