Stunning crystal clear lakes, verdant meadows and mountain scenery combined with a long list of endless activities to be pursued, whatever the season, the Kempinski Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps, just 20 minutes from the Austrian city of Salzburg, promises a very fine stay.

Arrive at Salzburg’s airport, and you’ll be about a half hour’s drive from the hotel; Munich is about a two and a half-hour drive, and both journeys are sizeably shortened by helicopter. Built in the shape of a horseshoe, the contemporary hotel has 138 rooms and suites, three restaurants and a bar, a full-service spa, a fitness centre and a pool that’s both indoors and out (heated, of course).

All rooms, even the entry-level ones, offer an outdoor space as well as anti-allergic bedding and a Nespresso machine, perfect for those needing a pick-me-up before they even get dressed in the morning. You won’t get a full mountain view, however, with a Superior Room, so it’s worthwhile upgrading to the next category, a Mountain View; you’ll be able to wake up, draw the drapes and soak up the scenery from your windows or terrace. Of course, there are suites to luxuriate in if you want the full alpine experience. The Maisonette Suites, entry-level in this category, are akin to staying in a private chalet. Set over two floors with a separate bedroom and living room, they come with a 40 sq m terrace and balcony as well a fireplace within.

The hotel’s fine-dining venue, Pur, must be on your to-do list. Locally sourced ingredients and seasonal menus at this one Michelin-starred restaurant are the lures, and Chef Ulrich Heimann’s creative culinary skills ensure the meal will be spectacular. An elaborate breakfast is served at the casual, but elegant, Johann Grill. Dinner is also served here, or else opt for the Vinotheque for a more casual affair with, you guessed it, many choices of local wine and plates made for sharing, including fondue.

The hotel’s pool is a popular venue, and there’s a gym with ample equipment to keep your fitness routine going, but with the great outdoors and the vast variety of seasonal sports on your doorstep, you’ll have a different adventure every day, something that never happens in a gym.
