An Art Deco icon with a splendid Midtown Manhattan address, the JW Marriott Essex House is an enchanting spot for a quintessential stay in the Big Apple. History and luxury in equal measures characterise this elegant establishment which has been classified as a New York Historical Hotel since 1931. An immediately recognisable fixture of the city skyline (the enormous rooftop letters spelling out “Essex House” certainly are a contributing factor) for nearly a century, the hotel blends historic allure with contemporary luxury in an ideal location for experiencing the very best that the city has to offer – not least of which is iconic Central Park which is virtually on the hotel’s doorstep.

Recent renovations have brought new life into the hotel's rooms and suites which are sophisticated, contemporary and – best of all – positively roomy by New York City standards. Interiors are slick, beautifully illuminated by natural light and boast supremely comfortable beds alongside a good dash of New York City pizzazz. Thoughtful touches like chaise lounges and luxury mod-cons make a pleasant stay even lovelier, and if you can manage to snag one of the rooms on the higher floors, you’ll be treated to spectacular Central Park views.

The hotel has just one restaurant, but – as there are a lifetime‘s worth of restaurants within shouting distance – this could hardly be considered a negative. Besides, the hotel’s solitary eatery – called South Gate Bar & Restaurant – is quite a good one with a fabulously stylish dining room, a crackling fireplace and a ground-floor location overlooking Central Park. Classic American comfort food dominates the delicious menu, and the cocktails are particularly good.

Adding to its appeal are the hotel’s facilities. Essex Hotel has both a spa and fitness centre, both of which are good-sized – something of a rarity in a city where space is at such a premium. The fitness centre stays open 24 hours and is well-equipped with treadmills, ellipticals and plenty of free weights. PRIMP Spa offers a peaceful place to relax and recharge whether to recover from jet lag or prep for a night out. Speaking of nights out, the hotel’s immediate surroundings are positively overflowing with things to do. Central Park – one of the cities most iconic and celebrated attractions – is literally right outside the door, while other must-visits such as Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Centre and – of course – Times Square are just a breezy stroll away.
