Set in the heart of the city in what was once a 16-century convent is JW Marriott El Convento Cusco: a boutique hotel that blends modern luxury with all the grandeur of a bygone era. The meticulously restored building enjoys a prime location close to many of the city's most beloved sites, with landmarks like Plaza de Armas situated just steps away.

Within the hotel, you’ll find two exhibition halls brimming with ancient Peruvian artefacts, which stand in stark contrast to the myriad works by contemporary Peruvian artists that decorate the hotel’s walls. This curated collection is rotated every three months, and many pieces are available to purchase. Other contemporary accents include the lobby’s dazzling Swarovski centrepiece – crafted from over 75,000 crystals – while the property’s historic roots shine through in its architecture: think cobblestones, brick arches and one of the city's most beautiful (and most spacious) courtyards.

Polished guest rooms are an excellently executed blend of old and new: sleek lines and a minimalist sensibility combines with Incan accents and ornate details to create a wonderfully bespoke environment. Wooden floors – and in some, stone walls – add an earthy appeal, while strategic pops of burnt umber and jade add a welcome bit of brightness. Spacious travertine bathrooms feature generously sized tubs, and thoughtful amenities include oxygen-enriched air systems to help guests adjust to the altitude. The only true shortcoming is that a handful of the rooms have virtually no view, with their large windows framing nothing more than stone walls. Thankfully, most have far more pleasing vistas, with some lucky accommodations gazing out at the cloister of the San Agustin Convent.

As far as amenities are concerned, the JW Marriott might just be the most well-appointed hotel in the city. There is no fitness centre, but there is a superb spa (complete with ancient Incan healing treatments), alongside one of the only hotel pools in Cusco. There’s also an excellent restaurant on-site and a host of other good options within walking distance. Called Qespi Restaurant, the hotel's signature dining venue is a masterful exploration of the flavours of Cusco and Peru as a whole, and the grand dining room is memorable as can be with its stone walls, polished floors and striking Gothic chandeliers.
